# Twilio SMS alternative

## Unitpost vs Twilio

> A programmable communications platform with APIs for SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, video and email.

**Twilio free tier:** No free tier. A 30-day trial with a set of free units (100 texts among them), sent from Twilio's templates to up to 5 verified numbers

**Twilio pricing shape:** Pay as you go from a prepaid balance: a price per message segment for each destination country, carrier fees on top in the US, a small fee for each failed US message, plus monthly phone number fees and one-time and monthly carrier registration fees. Volume and committed-use discounts are available.

## What Twilio does well

- Wider reach: 180+ countries and every sender type, proven at very large volume
- Every channel in one account: SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, video and, since May 2026, its own email API
- Verify, a managed one-time-code API with fallback channels and fraud protection
- Dedicated short codes in the US, Canada and the UK for high-throughput messaging, which we don't provision
- No monthly plan: you pay only for what you send

## Choose Twilio if

- You need voice, MMS, WhatsApp or short codes as well as SMS
- You want one-time codes managed for you (Verify) instead of sending codes yourself
- You text rarely and want no monthly plan at all
- You need wider carrier coverage and an enterprise contract

## Choose Unitpost if

- You send email and SMS and want one API key, one contact list, one set of webhooks and one bill
- You send marketing texts and want consent records, quiet hours and STOP handling enforced for you
- You want SMS templates, segments and scheduled campaigns in the product rather than built on a raw message API
- You want an AI agent to run your texting through a hosted MCP server
- You want idempotent sends, so a retried request never texts anyone twice

## Feature comparison

| Capability | Unitpost | Twilio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Price of a US text | $0.014 per segment, carrier fees included | Up to $0.0133 per segment once carrier fees are added |
| Price in other countries | One published price per country. Same as Twilio's list price or lower in 106 of the 175 countries we both price, higher in the rest | A list price per country, lower than ours where our cost is higher |
| Monthly minimum | A paid plan from $10 a month, which includes $10 of sending allowance for texts or email. The allowance refreshes monthly; credit bought separately never expires | None. Pay as you go from a prepaid balance |
| Countries | 177 countries | 180+ countries |
| Sender types | Toll-free and 10DLC numbers in the US, local numbers in Canada, alphanumeric Sender IDs where a country allows them | Long codes, toll-free numbers, short codes and alphanumeric Sender IDs |
| Two-way texting | Replies to numbers in the United States and Canada arrive as an sms.received webhook, 1¢ per received text | Replies to Twilio numbers in many countries, via webhook |
| Email and SMS on shared contacts | One contact list, consent record, template library and webhook set for email and SMS, with marketing campaigns and automations on both | Twilio Email (an email API, generally available since May 2026) shares the console and bill; SendGrid stays a separate platform |
| Voice, MMS and WhatsApp | Not offered | Offered |
| One-time codes | Send codes through the SMS or email API and check them yourself. No managed verification API | Verify: managed codes with fallback channels and fraud protection, priced per verification |
| Marketing text compliance | Enforced on every send: consent on record per contact, recipient-local quiet hours for marketing, STOP and HELP handled, double opt-in by text, a content check before a sender's first send | STOP and HELP handled by default on long codes and toll-free numbers; consent records and quiet hours are left to you |
| Contacts, segments and campaigns | SMS templates, topics, segments and scheduled campaigns in the product, shared with email | None in the core messaging API. A Bulk Messaging API (public beta) and Cohorts for lists and segments (private beta) are newer |
| Carrier registration | 10DLC, toll-free verification and Sender IDs filed from a guided dashboard flow or the API; carrier fees passed through at cost | Filed in the console or the API; fees billed per brand, campaign and number |
| Idempotent sends | Idempotency-Key on sends, 24-hour dedupe window, on SMS as on email | No idempotency key when creating a message |
| SMS pumping protection | On by default: texts reach only the countries we offer, with fraud filtering and per-workspace limits on new destinations | SMS Pumping Protection (free in the US and Canada, priced per country elsewhere) and per-country Geo Permissions |
| MCP server for AI agents | Hosted, with every SMS and email operation as a tool and OAuth sign-in | An official MCP server (beta) that searches the docs but doesn't call the API, and an alpha open-source server that does, run yourself |
| Track record | New. SMS has been in production since October 2026 | Years at very large scale, with a large developer community |

## How do I switch from Twilio?

There is no one-key import from Twilio. Your Twilio numbers stay with Twilio: Unitpost gives you new numbers or Sender IDs, and in the US you register your brand and campaign again (10DLC or toll-free verification), which the carriers review before you can send.

Import your contacts with their phone numbers and record the consent you already hold, opt-outs included, so nobody who texted STOP to your Twilio number hears from the new one.

Then change the send call to POST /sms, and point delivery callbacks at Unitpost webhooks (sms.sent, sms.delivered, sms.failed; replies arrive as sms.received). Keep Twilio sending until the new sender is approved and live.

## FAQ

### Is Unitpost cheaper than Twilio for SMS?

Not in the US. A US text costs $0.014 per segment with Unitpost, against up to $0.0133 at Twilio once carrier fees are added. Across the 175 countries we both price, ours is the same or lower in 106. Twilio has no monthly plan. SMS on Unitpost needs a paid plan from $10 a month, though that fee is itself sending allowance. The savings come from the rest of the stack: email, campaigns and contacts on the same bill as your texts.

### Does Unitpost have something like Twilio Verify?

No. Unitpost has no managed verification API. You generate the code, send it with the SMS or email API, and check it yourself. If you want codes, retries, fallback channels and fraud checks managed for you, Twilio Verify is the better fit.

### Can I keep my Twilio phone numbers?

No. Unitpost doesn't port existing numbers in. You get new toll-free or 10DLC numbers in the US, local numbers in Canada, or Sender IDs where a country allows them, and US numbers need carrier registration before they send.

### Twilio sells email now. Why use Unitpost for both?

Twilio Email, generally available since May 2026, puts an email API in the same console and bill as Twilio's SMS, and SendGrid stays a separate platform. Unitpost is one product around both channels: one contact list with consent per channel, templates, segments and scheduled campaigns for email and SMS, automations that send either, and quiet hours and unsubscribes enforced the same way on both. Twilio's own list and segment product, Cohorts, is in private beta.
