# Vonage SMS alternative

## Unitpost vs Vonage

> Ericsson's communications API business, with a Messages API for SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Messenger and Viber, plus voice, video and verification.

**Vonage free tier:** No free tier. €2 of test credit in demo mode, to up to 10 numbers, with a demo notice on every text

**Vonage pricing shape:** Pay as you go per message, with US carrier fees passed through on top and volume discounts through sales.

## What Vonage does well

- One Messages API across SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Messenger and Viber, with automatic failover between channels
- A large carrier network, with 1,600+ direct and tier-1 connections
- Verify over SMS, voice, email, WhatsApp and silent authentication
- Every US sender type, including short codes

## Choose Vonage if

- You need RCS, WhatsApp, Messenger or Viber with failover to SMS
- You want one-time codes managed for you, including silent authentication
- You need short codes or an enterprise contract

## Choose Unitpost if

- You want STOP handling, consent records and quiet hours on from day one, not switched on yourself
- You want contact lists, segments and scheduled campaigns for texts
- You want self-serve email and SMS on the same contacts and bill
- You want idempotent sends and a hosted MCP server

## Feature comparison

| Capability | Unitpost | Vonage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly minimum | A paid plan from $10 a month, which includes $10 of sending allowance for texts or email | None. Pay as you go |
| Channels | SMS and email | SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Messenger and Viber in one API, with failover |
| Sender types | Toll-free and 10DLC numbers in the US, local numbers in Canada, Sender IDs where a country allows them | 10DLC, toll-free, short codes and Sender IDs |
| Email | Transactional, marketing and inbound email, self-serve, on the same contacts and bill | An email channel in open beta since June 2026, for customers onboarded by an account manager |
| Marketing text compliance | Enforced on every send: consent on record per contact, recipient-local quiet hours for marketing, STOP and HELP handled, double opt-in by text, a content check before a sender's first send | STOP and HELP handling (Opt-Out Assist) has to be turned on; consent records and quiet hours are left to you |
| Contacts, segments and campaigns | SMS templates, topics, segments and scheduled campaigns in the product, shared with email | No contact lists or campaigns since Proactive Connect was retired, and no send-time field |
| Two-way texting | Replies to numbers in the United States and Canada arrive as an sms.received webhook, 1¢ per received text | Inbound messages to your application's webhook |
| One-time codes | Send codes through the SMS or email API and check them yourself. No managed verification API | Verify over SMS, voice, email, WhatsApp and silent authentication, priced per success |
| Idempotent sends | Idempotency-Key on sends, 24-hour dedupe window, on SMS as on email | No idempotency key; a client reference is echoed in status updates |
| SMS pumping protection | On by default: texts reach only the countries we offer, with fraud filtering and per-workspace limits on new destinations | Fraud Defender Standard is free; inflated-traffic protection and per-country limits need the paid Advanced tier |
| MCP server for AI agents | Hosted, with every SMS and email operation as a tool and OAuth sign-in | A hosted docs server, and a tooling server that sends messages but that you run yourself |
| Track record | New. SMS has been in production since October 2026 | Years of production messaging, owned by Ericsson since 2022 |

## How do I switch from Vonage?

There is no one-key import from Vonage, and Unitpost doesn't port numbers in. You get new numbers or Sender IDs, and in the US you register your brand and campaign with Unitpost (10DLC or toll-free verification), which the carriers review before you can send.

Import your contacts with their phone numbers and record the consent you already hold, opt-outs included, so nobody who texted STOP to your Vonage number hears from the new one.

Then change the send call to POST /sms and point delivery callbacks at Unitpost webhooks (sms.sent, sms.delivered, sms.failed; replies arrive as sms.received). Keep Vonage sending until the new sender is approved and live.

## FAQ

### Does Vonage handle STOP replies automatically?

Not by default. Vonage's Opt-Out Assist handles STOP and HELP once you turn it on (free for 10DLC, a monthly fee for short codes), and US carriers enforce STOP on toll-free numbers themselves. On Unitpost, STOP and HELP are handled on every send, and marketing texts also need consent on record and respect the recipient's quiet hours.

### Does Vonage have SMS campaigns?

Not any more. Vonage retired Proactive Connect, its lists and campaigns product, and the Messages API has no send-time field. Unitpost has SMS templates, topics, segments and scheduled campaigns on every paid plan.
