# Best email APIs for Node.js in 2026

For Node.js and TypeScript apps, Unitpost ranks first on the balance of a typed SDK, a clean API and the largest free plan here. Resend and Mailgun ship the most mature SDKs, Postmark has the best deliverability record, and SendGrid's Node.js SDK hasn't had a release in over a year.

> Updated 2026-11-02. We make Unitpost, and it is on this list. Every score has a reason and the weights are published below, so you can re-rank it for your own needs.

## How we scored

This list is for developers sending email from Node.js or TypeScript: a Next.js route, an Express or Fastify server, a queue worker or a serverless function. The SDK weighs most: official, typed and released in the last year.

- **Node.js SDK (30%).** An official Node.js SDK with TypeScript types, released in the last 12 months.
- **Developer experience (20%).** A clear REST API, current SDKs, readable errors and docs.
- **Free plan (20%).** A permanent free plan large enough to run a small app on, with no card.
- **Deliverability (15%).** A long public record of inbox placement, and the tooling to protect it.
- **First paid step (15%).** A cheap first paid plan that grows with sends.

Each product gets 1 to 5 per criterion; the total is the weighted mean.

## FAQ

### Do I need an SDK to send email from Node.js?

No. Every API on this list takes a JSON POST with fetch, and most also offer SMTP for Nodemailer. An SDK adds types, retries and webhook verification helpers, so it's worth it when it's maintained and typed.

### Which email SDK works in serverless and edge functions?

SDKs built on fetch run in serverless functions; check the package's runtime notes before an edge runtime. A plain fetch to the REST API works everywhere, which is the fallback when an SDK pulls in Node-only modules.
