Comparing more than two? Best Twilio alternatives in 2026, ranked with published weights.

Which should you choose?

Choose Twilio if

  • You need voice, MMS, WhatsApp or short codes as well as SMS
  • You want one-time codes managed for you (Verify) instead of sending codes yourself
  • You text rarely and want no monthly plan at all
  • You need wider carrier coverage and an enterprise contract

Choose Unitpost if

  • You send email and SMS and want one API key, one contact list, one set of webhooks and one bill
  • You send marketing texts and want consent records, quiet hours and STOP handling enforced for you
  • You want SMS templates, segments and scheduled campaigns in the product rather than built on a raw message API
  • You want an AI agent to run your texting through a hosted MCP server
  • You want idempotent sends, so a retried request never texts anyone twice

What Twilio does well

Stated plainly, because a comparison that pretends otherwise is not worth reading.

  • Wider reach: 180+ countries and every sender type, proven at very large volume
  • Every channel in one account: SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, video and, since May 2026, its own email API
  • Verify, a managed one-time-code API with fallback channels and fraud protection
  • Dedicated short codes in the US, Canada and the UK for high-throughput messaging, which we don't provision
  • No monthly plan: you pay only for what you send

How do I switch from Twilio?

There is no one-key import from Twilio. Your Twilio numbers stay with Twilio: Unitpost gives you new numbers or Sender IDs, and in the US you register your brand and campaign again (10DLC or toll-free verification), which the carriers review before you can send.

Import your contacts with their phone numbers and record the consent you already hold, opt-outs included, so nobody who texted STOP to your Twilio number hears from the new one.

Then change the send call to POST /sms, and point delivery callbacks at Unitpost webhooks (sms.sent, sms.delivered, sms.failed; replies arrive as sms.received). Keep Twilio sending until the new sender is approved and live.

Frequently asked questions

Is Unitpost cheaper than Twilio for SMS?

Not in the US. A US text costs $0.014 per segment with Unitpost, against up to $0.0133 at Twilio once carrier fees are added. Across the 175 countries we both price, ours is the same or lower in 106. Twilio has no monthly plan. SMS on Unitpost needs a paid plan from $10 a month, though that fee is itself sending allowance. The savings come from the rest of the stack: email, campaigns and contacts on the same bill as your texts.

Does Unitpost have something like Twilio Verify?

No. Unitpost has no managed verification API. You generate the code, send it with the SMS or email API, and check it yourself. If you want codes, retries, fallback channels and fraud checks managed for you, Twilio Verify is the better fit.

Can I keep my Twilio phone numbers?

No. Unitpost doesn't port existing numbers in. You get new toll-free or 10DLC numbers in the US, local numbers in Canada, or Sender IDs where a country allows them, and US numbers need carrier registration before they send.

Twilio sells email now. Why use Unitpost for both?

Twilio Email, generally available since May 2026, puts an email API in the same console and bill as Twilio's SMS, and SendGrid stays a separate platform. Unitpost is one product around both channels: one contact list with consent per channel, templates, segments and scheduled campaigns for email and SMS, automations that send either, and quiet hours and unsubscribes enforced the same way on both. Twilio's own list and segment product, Cohorts, is in private beta.
